We’re cancelling your appointment: how not to get sent home from the spa

We’re going to have to reschedule…

There are several reasons why you might show up for your massage therapy, skin care or facial appointment and be turned away or rescheduled. It’s important to educate clients about these difficult subjects, and many spas won’t. (We’re the ones who address the elephant in the room. We care more about educating you than we do about our fear of rejection.)

Reason #1: You’re Sick

It may seem like “just the sniffles” or “a minor cold” but please be aware that the safety of the people who work at the spa, as well as those who are booked for a facial or massage appointment after you, is more important than you getting a treatment that day.

I know. It sucks. However, consider this: some people have very weak immune systems. Is it fair to them to lose 1-2 weeks of paid work? It’s not uncommon for something to be “minor” when you’ve had a similar illness or a strong immune system. The people who work in the spa cannot work if they are sick, and we don’t get paid time off or sick leave.

Another thing to consider is how taxed your system already is. If you’re fighting off an illness, getting that spa day may actually make you worse and extend the length of time you’re sick.

Reason #2: You’ve Got an Active Virus

This may sound the same as the first item, but I’m not referring to any old cold bug. If you are having an active breakout of a cold sore, HSV-1 or HSV-2, herpes lesion, or whatever else you want to call it, we may need to reschedule.

Almost anything we can do could make it worse. And if we treat the area directly? It could SPREAD. That’s right… your cold sore could go from a mouth issue to a nose and eye issue.

In fact, if you are prone to cold sores, LET US KNOW. You may even want to do what most clients do, which is ask your doctor about medication. Many have a prescription anti-viral from their general physician and take it for 7-10 days prior to any facial service. Any facial treatment you receive can set off a flare up.

Reason #3: It’s a Bad Fit

There are many times we have turned away clients because it is a bad fit. Let’s say someone has had several massages and isn’t improving. We’ve tried multiple techniques… nada. We may spend some time finding you a good referral for a physician, chiropractor, or another allied practitioner to help you get the results you need.

Or let’s say you come in for reduction of very deep acne scarring. There are services that could help that are not in our scope of practice. Others are, but we feel strongly that they should be performed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon so you bet the best results possible. We’re probably going to refer you to an office we trust for a consultation.

We take pride in not being a “jack of all trades”. That’s why we don’t do waxing, brow shaping, nails, or a number of other spa services. We focus on quality massage therapy and clinical skin treatments.

Reason #4: You Didn’t Listen

If you have booked a skin treatment and you show up with a bad sunburn, we probably won’t work on you and may not even rebook you. Especially if our instructions said to avoid the sun.

Certain services, such as chemical peels, cannot be done on sunburned skin. On top of that, if you didn’t listen to us with pre-peel instructions, you probably won’t listen to us about post-peel instructions. Going into the sun after a peel can create areas of terrible hyper-pigmentation. Most people want less brown spots, not more. Your skin is on the line, as is our reputation.

Massage therapy services can still often be performed, just not on the areas that are badly burned.

Reason #5: Drugs and Booze

If you come in for a procedure and you are drunk, stoned, or obviously altered, we will likely have to reschedule you. If you are on prescription medication that causes you to appear altered, it’s your responsibility to let us know that in your consultation. A note from your doctor may be required. We would feel terrible about doing a procedure on you that you later regretted; you must be able to legally consent. Especially for clinical treatments that require proper follow-up care.

Reason #6: You’re Creepy

Predators come in all genders, orientations, and ages. If you are acting in a way that is inappropriate or makes the treatment provider feel uncomfortable, you may be asked to leave. Threats, inappropriate touching, revealing private areas, or anything beyond creepy will be reported to the police right away. Zero tolerance.

Reason #7: Something Just Isn’t Right

If you come to our office and something just isn’t right… we may reschedule you. Our goal is to keep your health and well-being at the top of our priorities. Clients who are “out of it”, sweating profusely, acting confused, or otherwise just “aren’t right” at that moment may not be in a safe mindset to receive any type of massage or facial services.

To sum up…

We’re concerned about your health, safety, and well-being, as well as that of our other clients and our employees. If a service isn’t right for you at this time, please don’t take it personally. We’d rather have you come back when you’re healthy, sober, and sun-burn free!
